Architectural Styles - Colonial Revival

·         Characteristics
o   Columned porch or portico
o   Front door sidelights
o   Dormers
o   Symmetrical Facade
o   Double-hung windows, often multi-paned
o   Bay windows or paired or triple windows
o   Wood shutters often with incised patterns
o   Decorative pendants
o   Side gabled or hipped roofs
o   Cornice with dentils or modillions
o   Interior is not symmetrical and more open than historic examples
o   One-story wings, usually with a flat roof and commonly embellished with a balustrade
o   Fireplaces
·         Time Period and History
o   1880 – 1960  
o   Based on Georgian and Federal buildings
o   Postwar (Civil War) decades wanted to build a sense of national unity
o   The Philadelphia's 1876 International Exhibition celebrating 100 years of American independence instigated the Colonial Revival movement and this was promoted again at the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago
